The New Regulation on Artificial Intelligence in the EU

After an intense week of debate, there is now an agreement on the first Artificial Intelligence regulation in the European Union. This agreement is in the final stages of preparation, awaiting its passage through the European Parliament and Council.

This law has been in the making since 2021 and in its initial conception, it focused mainly on the risks and problems that video facial analysis and recognition in public spaces can pose. However, due to the great advances in generative AI over the last year, legislators have had to broaden its scope.

Transparency will be primarily demanded from major AI players and companies operating in sectors such as medicine, banking, and security. It also seeks to prevent the uncontrolled scanning and processing of images.

In my opinion, once again, the EU is trying to lock the stable door after the horse has bolted. Instead of promoting models and European-based companies like Mistral, we are regulating sectors that are not at all mature yet.

We will closely follow the progress of this new regulation that is still to be defined and approved.
