Visit to the Free Software Office of the UGR
Today I had the opportunity to visit the Free Software Office of the UGR (OSL). Despite being aware of its existence since its creation, I had never had the chance to be there. This visit was motivated by the recording of a short segment for the new MOOC of the UGR in which I am participating.
Who is the OSL?
The OSL is an institution of the University of Granada that promotes the use and development of free and open-source software. It is not limited to the university but also reaches out to society in general. You can learn more about them on their website, osl.ugr.es.
My experience at the OSL
During my visit, I was able to see firsthand the great work they do. They revive old equipment that works perfectly as PCs for administrative tasks or web browsing, just by installing a good distribution of GNU/Linux. While I was there, a couple arrived requesting a computer for their small business.
Available resources
The OSL doesn’t just provide equipment; they also have several 3D printers that I’m sure are available to any student or graduate who needs them.
The OSL team
The best part is that at the helm is a colleague from my graduating class, Pablo.
Upcoming visits
I hope to have the opportunity to drop by the OSL again soon and bring a couple of machines that I only have at home collecting dust. Long live the OSL and their work!
